What is StandOut?

StandOut is a passionate & active group that promotes equality for our fellow lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender peers. With the help from our straight allies, we provide a fun experience with a valuable purpose on the campus of Grand Rapids Community College.

We gladly welcome all who support our LGBT peers in their quest for equality. Please join us every Monday beginning in the Fall 2012 term from 1:00PM-2:00PM in the Farside Room located on the first floor of the Student Center on the downtown campus. You are also welcome to Contact Us with any questions or desires to partner with us for prospective charitable events.

We strive to create an accepting outlet for those who are struggling and strongly believe in the power of compassion and understanding. If you or a friend is in need of help and support, StandOut is here for you. Whether it is with guidance through the coming out process or to find a local, supportive safe haven, please do not hesitate to Contact StandOut! You may also explore and contact the many resources we provide on this site. StandOut is passionate toward our commitment to helping you!

But I'm Not Gay! Why Should I Care?

The significance of straight allies is tremendous in any GSA. Open-minded straight students and faculty members remain conscious of homophobia existing in their own community. During this tumultuous time, ignorance and prejudice threatens the many freedoms their heterosexual peers often take for granted. Straight supporters comprehend the importance of tolerance as it effects all regardless of orientation. They participate in hopes of helping end harassment and discrimination to better their school, local community, and nation.

Furthermore, partnering with straight peers to help communicate shared objectives and concerns that transcend sexual orientation has a profound effect on eliminating negative stereotypes. We know the many issues concerning gay rights are civil rights and work to create a positive impact on and off campus.

The Importance of Diversity

StandOut recognizes the benefits of embracing diversity on campuses in Michigan and across the country. Insight into other individuals’ struggles and desires for acceptance is a lesson many are not taught in the classroom. Therefore, many students, faculty and staff members take advantage of the unique opportunity to broaden their perceptions and challenge their beliefs.

Support among peers with similar adversities and shared ethics can prove to empower an individual’s self-esteem. An individual’s journey into self-acceptance also helps build camaraderie among fellow peers when they recognize they are truly not alone. In addition, solidarity leads to better understanding of our many differences within the LGBT community. We believe as a minority that education is the foundation of building a stronger alliance necessary to end discrimination and homophobia.

During the Fall 2011 and Winter 2012 semester, StandOut will be hosting a series of live online chats.  We will focus on answering questions about our organization.  Check back often on the Event Calendar page for a schedule of our live, staffed chat sessions.
